Why are you checking my pulse?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, pulse diagnosis is an essential part of understanding where the imbalances lie in the body.

We use three fingers to palpate the radial arteries at the wrist, assessing six positions on both wrists to evaluate internal organ health. By feeling the pulse's rate, depth, and qualities—such as whether it is floating, deep, rapid, or thready—practitioners can determine the type and location of a pathological condition and monitor a patient's progress.

It's a quiet listening in from the practitioner to the patient. For most of my patients, you just take the opportunity to relax whilst I do all the hard work 😊

What is Moxibustion? Moxibustion is an essential part of Chinese medicine which takes its name from moxa, a natural substance prepared from mugwort leaves.
Moxa can be held just above the skin, placed on top of an acupuncture needle or directly on the skin, usually over specific acupuncture points or meridians. The herb is then lit and as it slowly smoulders, heat permeates the skin and affects the flow of ‘qi’ (energy) and blood in the area being treated.
Needle moxa (as shown in this photo) is a perfect way of treating MSK (musculoskeletal) conditions such as lower back pain, sciatica and knee pain. The warmth of the moxa permeates into the needle and patients report a deep warmth and release in the affected area. It’s a personal fave of mine, especially when I can watch the beautiful smoke spiral upward. #moxibustion #fiveelementacupuncture #needlemoxa #acupuncture #wymondham #norwichacupuncture

Summer, the season of the Fire element.
The seeds sown in spring have come into fruition!

The gift of the Fire element is to love oneself and others. Yet when Fire burns too hard, it can cause us to feel burnt-out. The joy is extinguished. We’ve got nothing left to give. It’s so easy to fill up everything in the summer, so that it’s all crammed in, we can also take a pause.

This week I’ve been so lucky to take an inspiration trip to one of my favourite countries #portugal.

Taking time to get back into a regular practice of yoga (which is where elements acupuncture started) and learning from incredible teachers whilst being in the most beautiful space with a very good friend. @soulandsurfportugal is the perfect place to take a pause, re-inspire yourself and learn how to surf in the Atlantic Ocean 🌊

We’ve all been waiting for Spring…

The light, growth, abundance, and hope.

I love a warm, rainy, spring day. Everything is exploding, calling us outside to explore once again. We’ve been blessed this month with the presence of a furry friend Carn, Exmoor Lurcher on loan from @frithmeadow

She’s brought our family outside every morning and evening into our woodland Dell in #norwich

In Five Element theory, Spring is the time of the Wood element. When energy increases, buds start bursting forth, days are lengthening, we feel it in our bones. Our lives begin to change, the draw to be outside increases and the hope for the summer begins to unfold.

When balanced Wood has strength, there is direction and purpose. Wood can grow strong but with flexibility, able to move with the wind and change direction as needed.

Out of balance we begin to see brittle wood, deprived of water, lacking flexibility, snapping in a strong wind and growing without direction.

Ever feel like that? I certainly do, and that’s when I know my Wood element is out of balance. Frustration/ Anger is the emotion connected to Wood. Taking time to notice this energetic is valuable, it can show us where we might need spend a bit more time nourishing ourselves. Follow me for some seasonal suggestions on how to balance your Wood energy.

Hi, let me introduce myself, i'm Annie.

I wanted to share a bit more about who I am, and how I came to acupuncture.

At 17, I discovered a holistic approach to my body through my own yoga practice. Yoga introduced me to the concept of ‘prana’ (primary energy in Sanskrit). It's helped me to continually check in with my body and mind. When things don't feel right, I go to yoga. This practice planted a seed of intrigue to learn more about ancient eastern philosophy and medicine.

Whilst volunteering with the fabulous team at @valedemoses I was introduced to the magic of Five Element Acupuncture. The concept of diagnosing and treating a person’s element – Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood. I wanted to learn more, but it wasn’t until many years later that I had the opportunity to study for my licentiate at @theacupunctureacademy in Leamington Spa.

I feel I've opened a book that will never be closed. This is so important for me, as I have in the past got bored and sought out the next challenge. Not with acupuncture, there is so much to learn and cultivate in practice. An endless world of discovery and amazement at the power and depth of classical Chinese medicine. With each patient, a different approach is needed. A new presentation of each element.

Treatments tailored to what each individual needs - this is what I love about being an acupuncturist. Combining my interest in people with classical Chinese theory.
